The common capacity-code pattern
Many North American central systems include a three-digit capacity code in the model number. Common values include 018, 024, 030, 036, 042, 048, and 060.
The number usually represents thousands of BTU per hour. Divide by 12 to estimate nominal tons: 036 is about 36,000 BTU/h or 3 tons; 048 is about 4 tons; 060 is about 5 tons.

Why a detected number can be wrong
The same digits can represent voltage, revision, cabinet size, or a sequence number. Mini-splits, geothermal systems, commercial equipment, and multi-zone products often use different conventions.
Treat a generic decoder as a lead, not proof. Confirm capacity on the rating plate, AHRI certificate, installation manual, or manufacturer lookup.
Tonnage is not a sizing recommendation
Knowing the installed capacity does not prove that the system was correctly sized. Replacement sizing should use a room-by-room or whole-building load calculation rather than matching the old model automatically.
