Serial numbers identify a specific unit

A serial number is intended to distinguish one physical unit from every other unit produced by the manufacturer. Many manufacturers embed a date code near the beginning, middle, or end of that identifier.

The format is manufacturer-specific and can change over time. That is why choosing the exact brand and equipment family matters before interpreting any characters.

Model numbers describe a product configuration

A model number commonly describes the product family and may encode capacity, fuel, voltage, cabinet width, refrigerant, efficiency tier, revision, or market. Multiple physical units can share the same model number.

Capacity codes such as 024, 036, 048, and 060 often correspond to nominal HVAC capacity in thousands of BTU per hour, but the exact position and meaning differ by manufacturer.
